Why DC EV Chargers Need Insulation Monitoring?
DC fast charging systems operate with high DC voltage. If insulation between DC+ / DC− and PE deteriorates, the fault may affect electrical safety, charging reliability and equipment operation.
Typical causes include:
- Cable or connector insulation deterioration
- Moisture or water ingress
- Damaged insulation
- Aging charging components
- Environmental contamination
- Insulation faults in the DC output circuit
For an ungrounded DC system, insulation monitoring provides an additional layer of protection by continuously or periodically evaluating the insulation condition between the DC conductors and ground.
Acrel’s DC insulation monitoring devices are designed specifically for 100–1000 V DC EV charging applications, with different models for different charger architectures.
How the Solution Works?
Typical DC EV Charging Insulation Monitoring Architecture
The monitoring device detects insulation conditions between the DC system and PE. When the insulation resistance falls below the configured threshold, the device provides warning or alarm information.
